Meet Dr. Kit Barton: Making the Theoretical Practical

Out of the Classroom:
Dr. Barton loves exploring various London neighborhoods and their pubs.
Dr. Kit Barton might have been the only teenage canoeing instructor and wilderness trip leader whose campfire ghost stories turned into tales of existential bewilderment. It was around that time he thought that perhaps he should pursue philosophy.
Fast forward 15 years: now a Ph.D. in philosophy, Dr. Barton's fireside musings have morphed into lectures at AIU London on everything from ethics to comparative religions. Dr. Barton decided to teach because "having a job that allows me to talk about ideas freely is great. Working together we re-evaluate our preconceptions and assumptions, and this is very rewarding."
Dr. Barton doesn't just teach, however. An executive member and conference organizer of the Society for European Philosophy, Barton also extensively publishes in periodicals from The Journal for British Society of Phenomenology to Radical Philosophy.
While Dr. Barton's lectures could emphasize complex and profound issues only—we are talking about philosophy and ethics, after all—he instead chooses to make the subject matter more understandable and practical to his students' lives. "Philosophy is, of course, highly theoretical in some of its essential aspects, so it is always the job of any philosophy professor to tether it down to more everyday experience. The AIU undergraduate courses cover the same essential ground as other schools. However, I aim to keep my classes relevant and contemporary by including the current topics that interest my students."
