Meet AIU Faculty/Staff
Karen Colley
Fashion Lecturer
Subjects taught at AIU:
Drawing courses
Design courses
My background is in Fashion Design, Textile Design and Fine Art. I worked for different companies before establishing my own knitwear business, designing and producing fashion knitwear which was exported to the US, Japan and Australia.
I have been able to bring my experience from the fashion industry to teaching and have taught at colleges and universities in the UK and the US. At AIU I enjoy teaching a diverse range of students from different cultural backgrounds.
In the Fashion Department I teach across a range of courses relating to my background, including research, design, textiles and portfolio development. As a teacher, my aims are to encourage students to develop their creativity and individuality, also to become autonomous learners and acquire transferable skills, which can be continually developed and applied in different situations.
My own particular interests lie in exploring the creative process and the development of ideas and awareness of visual aesthetic. I am also concerned with the different influences on fashion and its wider cultural contexts, especially the overlap between fashion and art. I also work as a practising artist.
