Meet AIU Faculty/Staff
Georg Meyer-Wiel
Fashion Lecturer
What is your background and experience and especially in relation to Fashion? What do you do outside the department if relevant?
Having studied Communication Design at Folkwang in Essen, Germany - where I specialized in Drawing and Calligraphy - I came to London where I graduated with a Masters Degree in Fashion Design from the Royal College of Art. Whilst selling one-off garments in London stores, I began teaching at the London College of Fashion, AIU and other faculties.
I have since designed several small fashion brands and worked with Select NYC on projects for Swarovski and Artistry.
In 2005 I generated conceptual wardrobe designs for the movie Minotaur and Swanlake by K-Ballet in Tokyo and in 2006 designed costumes for the production Devolution by the Australian Dance Theatre.
In 2007 I have designed costumes and stage for Fugal by Rafael Bonachela in collaboration with the State Theatre of Saarbruecken, Germany and also for Infinity by Rambert Dance Company in London.
I also regularly conducts workshops at the British Museum.
In the meantime I have worked continuously as an artist and have exhibited my work regularly. Publications include The Independent, Sunday Times Style, Vogue UK, Tank, Dazed & Confused and Showstudio.
Why do you teach our students? What do you do within the department?
I enjoy teaching because I see it as creative conversation, an exchange of ideas. I get a lot out of it, especially if students are enthusiastic
I think that it is most important for students to understand what they want, as early as possible. To learn how to work conceptually and how to do thorough research in order to find out what their personal strengths and styles are. Therefore I am very happy to be teaching classes that are interdisciplinary and experimental – Principles of Design II for example, Creative Drape, or Design Research. These classes confront them with a variety of mediums and help them to identify what they really like about fashion.
