Monika Piatkowski trained as both a visual artist and graphic designer at The American University in London and Glasgow School of Art, completing an MA in Multidisciplinary Design in 1994. After graduating she worked as a freelance graphic designer, specialising in Corporate Identity and Television graphics for clients such UK Gold, BBC and the Norwegian health Department, as well as clients within the corporate and construction sectors.
In 1998 she founded the design studio 'Hive' with her partner Mark Dyson. Hive is an interdisciplinary design partnership specialising in furniture, lighting, interior accessories and design. During the ten years since the foundation of the partnership, Hive's clients have included Habitat, Nicole Farhi, Harrods, Clarins and CVO Fire, while Hive's own range of furniture and accessories have retailed across Europe, North America and the Far East. Hive products and designs have featured in over thirty different publications, with editorial features in ELLE Decoration, The World of Interiors, In View, The New York Times, The Independent, Living Etc. and the design guide Design UK. In 2001 Monika took over the daily running as well as the creative direction of Hive. In 2003 Monika received the Peugeot design Award and the ELLE Decoration International Design Award for the 'Cityacape' rug. In August 2005 she received the Best Designer of The Year Award by Elle Decoration in Norway. Monika is currently working on a commission of four large scale floor rugs for the VTR Bank, to be installed in the listed Lloyds Building in the city in October 2008. She will also be exhibiting as part of 100% Norway with new Hive products as part of the London Design Festival 2008.
Monika has also developed a career as an artist over the last 10 years, with a painting studio based in Deptford, London. She has held several solo shows and participated in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. She frequently works to commission, collaborating with interior designers and architects for projects involving corporate clients such as Aldwych One, Hilton, Ask, and Zizzi's as well as private clients. Her most recent commissions have included paintings and image development for Dim T's flagship restaurants in More London and Hampstead.
