I started my second career when I came to teach at AIU in 1999 and after 25 years experience of running a fashion business. My business partner and colleague commented that it was the perfect job for me; a roomful of students sat at the end furthest from the (locked) door, listening to my every word for five hours at a time!
The reality wasn't quite like that, (I didn't lock the door in case I needed an escape route) and the bit that she missed out is the best bit of my job, interacting with the young people from around the world who make up our student body.
My position in the department is Assistant Dean for Fashion Design with Marketing and my role is to manage the progression of this BA. Honours programme to ensure that the students get the best educational experience possible. I believe that everybody should have the opportunity to find their strengths, deal with their weaknesses and grow as a valued member of our departmental and world wide community.
Any student joining AIU London should be prepared to work very hard because there is no easy route to a degree in such an exciting, competitive and demanding profession. We will give you the tools; it's up to you to use them.
Teaching and learning is a two way street. We put in, you put in, and we all get something back. At the end of the programme, the students are ready to go out in the world and somewhere along the line; I hope that I've had a little input into their success.
