Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design (BFA)

The goal of the Fashion Design program at AIU is to develop creative and innovative designers who are equipped with the techniques of fine craftsmanship and attuned to the needs of the consumer. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design degree program is designed to provide specialized training in sketching, garment construction, patternmaking, draping, computer-aided design, illustration and portfolio development. The program emphasizes creativity, mastering traditional skills and enhancing design or art skills with technology that is used in the fashion industry.

Graduates of the Fashion Design program should be creative, design-focused, fashion innovators, who are passionate about fashion design. They should have learned how to express their personal vision of fashion through the development of innovative design, which expresses their grasp of the conceptual and the aesthetic in clothing. They should have the abilities to develop innovative designs from original research, prototype and construct garments which embody both their talents as designers and their design philosophies. Upon graduation, they should be able to work in the fashion industry as multi-skilled, innovative professionals.

The Fashion Design program is designed to prepare students interested in developing and advancing careers in fashion design and related areas, such as styling, fashion buying, and fashion promotion.

Challenging, Relevant Coursework

The Fashion Design program offers a rigorous academic degree, taught by faculty with experience in the fashion industry, many of whom are industry practitioners. The program has very strong links with industry, through guest speakers, live projects, work experience and internships, which offer students the opportunity to make contacts with fashion personnel and companies in London.

The educational aims of the program are to:

  • Promote a comprehensive understanding of the fashion design process to enable students to develop as creative professionals with strong conceptual and technical skills.
  • Foster knowledge of fashion that can enable students to develop their intuitive response to fashion directions.
  • Develop an understanding of important contemporary issues within fashion and within its wider contexts.
  • Encourage students to develop as independent thinkers and to review, reflect upon and evaluate their own work in relation to fashion and the creative industries.
  • Develop appropriate levels of theoretical, practical and transferable skills to enable students to pursue professional careers in fashion or post-graduate courses.
  • Enable students to develop their individual strengths and pursue their individual interests within fashion design and related industries.
